Can I switch insurers before renewal?

General

Yes, you can cancel at any time. The insurer refunds the unused premium, often at a “short rate”, which is a bit less than a pro rata refund. The AMF considers a holdback of up to 10% of the unused premium reasonable. Check your policy and have the new one in place before cancelling the old one to avoid a gap.

A question about your own policy?

This site explains the general rules. Only your insurer can say what your policy covers: ask your agent or broker. This site doesn’t make recommendations. To choose coverage, also talk to a certified professional.
